Smart Sewers: How Robots and Smart Pipes Are Saving Our Streets

sewer worker on street

It is a stressful experience to be confronted with a sewer backup. Fortunately, the way we manage our waste is getting a serious upgrade. We are moving away from the days of digging up entire front yards to find a single crack in a sewer line. The future of plumbing is now becoming much more intelligent and much less messy.

Pipes That Can Scrub Themselves Clean

The buildup of grease and hair that turns into a solid clog is a common problem with sewer lines. Scientists are now working on self-cleaning pipes that use special interior coatings to keep gunk from ever sticking to the sides. These materials are very slippery like the surface of a non-stick frying pan. This allows water to remove debris before it can settle. Some of these advanced systems are being created to use high-pressure water to keep pipes clean. They can automatically trigger a quick blast of water to clear the path when the system detects that the flow is slowing down. This means that tree roots will have a much harder time causing a disaster.

Artificial Intelligence Is Watching the Sewers

It might sound strange to think about a computer program monitoring a sewer. However, artificial intelligence is a perfect fit for this kind of work. Cities are starting to install smart sensors inside main lines that can listen to the sound of flowing water or measure the pressure of the air inside the tunnel. These sensors send data to an AI program that can spot a problem weeks before a pipe bursts. If the AI notices a strange vibration, it might conclude that a heavy truck drove over a weak spot and caused a hairline fracture. Catching these issues early allows workers to fix the pipe with a small robot instead of waiting for the road to collapse. This saves millions of dollars and prevents the stinky mess that usually comes with a major sewer failure.

Sewer Robots on the Scene

We no longer have to have humans crawl into dark and dangerous spaces to check on sewer pipes. Small robots with high-definition cameras now do the work. These machines can crawl through tight bends and swim through murky water to show engineers what is happening inside the line. Some of these robots are even smart enough to apply a waterproof patch to a hole without a human having to steer them.

A Cleaner Future

We take for granted that our sinks will drain and our streets will stay dry. However, those things require a lot of hidden hard work. As these smart systems become more common, major emergencies will become more rare. If you have concerns or require sewer line services, contact Pride of Tucson in Tucson, AZ.
