Ductless mini-splits offer zoned cooling and better energy efficiency than many other models. As many as eight mini-split air handlers can be connected to one outdoor condenser without needing bulky, leaky ductwork to run under your floors. If you notice your ductless system blowing hot air instead of cool air, you’re probably dealing with one of the problems we’ll discuss below.
You Need to Change the Filter
Changing the filters regularly on your ductless mini-split is crucial. Dirty filters cause the system to work harder, and that blocks the flow of cooled air into a room. If possible, clean your filter once or twice a month and replace it every three months. If you have pets or someone in your home who smokes, you’ll need to clean and replace your filters more often.
The Refrigerant Is Low
Your ductless system relies on a chemical called refrigerant to transfer heat. If it’s low or leaking, your system can’t work properly. One sign of low refrigerant is ice on the outside condenser’s evaporator coils. Low refrigerant is something that needs to be addressed by an HVAC technician trained to handle it. Not only is it unsafe for you to handle refrigerant on your own, but it’s also illegal.
Faulty Reversing Valve
The reversing valve allows your ductless mini-split to switch between heating mode and cooling mode. When something goes wrong with that valve, your system may become stuck in the wrong mode. Most people report this problem happening in the early part of the cooling season after they initially switch between heating and cooling modes.
Obstructions Around the Condenser
It’s important to make sure that the outdoor condenser unit is free of dirt and debris and has a clear space around it. Shrubbery planted too close to the outdoor unit can interfere with heat exchange. Make sure that there is at least 3 feet of clearance around the outdoor component.
Incorrect Thermostat Settings
Perhaps the least stressful cause of your mini-split blowing hot air involves the thermostat. If you accidentally put the system into heating mode, it should produce warm air. Before you panic about why your ductless system is heating your home, make sure that you haven’t accidentally told it to do so.
